Current Ownership and Philosophy
Emmanuel Reynaud is currently in charge of Chateau Rayas and the related estates. He is known for his modesty and dedication to craftsmanship. Emmanuel remains true to the family's traditions and philosophy, never compromising on quality.
He rarely gives interviews, and the estate's wines are never aggressively marketed. Yet the demand is enormous, and Chateau Rayas wines are among the most traded Rhône wines on the ShareWine marketplace.
Fun fact: The vineyards at Chateau Rayas cover only about 10 hectares, which is very small compared to other producers in the area.
Chateau Rayas's Different Cuvées and Flavor Profiles
Chateau Rayas produces three primary cuvées under the Chateau Rayas name:
Chateau Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge
This is the flagship wine of the estate. It is made from 100% Grenache, which is rare in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where blends are the norm. The wine is known for its elegance, pure fruit profile, silky tannins, and perfumed aroma with notes of cherry, strawberry, licorice, and spices.
Chateau Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
Rayas' white wine is much rarer and made from Grenache Blanc. It features a rich, full-bodied profile with notes of white flowers, honey, and stone fruits. It has excellent aging potential and develops incredible complexity over time.
Pignan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge
Pignan is considered the second wine of Rayas but is still of very high quality. It is also made from 100% Grenache, sourced from younger vines. The wine has a lighter and more approachable style compared to the main cuvée but shares many of the same characteristics.
In addition, Emmanuel Reynaud also owns Chateau des Tours and Chateau de Fonsalette, where he produces wines in the same spirit but with slightly different character.
Overall, Chateau Rayas wines are often described as "Burgundian" in style due to their finesse and elegance.
